Supergirl Season 3 Episode 6 Full Recap : Midvale
Just because Kara and Alex returned to their hometown doesn’t mean everything’s great for them. Find out what you missed with our Supergirl recap of “Midvale.”
Borrowing J’onn’z stellar car, Alex and Kara return to Midvale. (According to the DC Wiki, this city is located on the outskirts of Metropolis, apparently. Other notable residents include Lena Luthor, so I’ll be working on my childhood run-in fanfiction when the episode ends.) Unfortunately, Alex is pretty sour from the get considering her recent break-up with Maggie. I mean, she’s reasonably upset because they were engaged, and that was a significant relationship for her. However, our first real conversation of the night happens between Eliza and Kara, and focuses on her rough year instead.
Actually, it’s funny for Kara to say she’s walking away from “certain vulnerabilities” when one considers she hung up the cape for a few days just to go home. Of course, I’m not saying she can’t but what if someone’s getting hurt in National City right now? I’m just saying, it’s ironic she’s talking about accepting she’s not human while taking a very human break.

Baby Kara and Alex fight over the same things any other sister does: Bathroom time, babysitting and school work. At school, Alex is the popular girl. Meanwhile, Kara struggles with history homework, excels at physical education, adores Superman from afar (who is wrestling with his enemy, Lex, at this time), and of course, is generally nice to other outcasts. Like Kenny, her childhood crush.
After a mix-up with some bullies, Kenny and Kara share a nice night under the stars where they imagine what life is like in space. They almost kiss before Kara heads home. Alex catches her sneaking in late and yells at her again for staying out (and obviously, for drastically altering her life).
The following day, Kara overhears the police radio as they discover Kenny’s dead body on the side of the road. A little intense for my tastes. But hopefully, there’s more of a point than just adding another facet to Kara’s trauma.

Naturally, Kara starts to investigate Kenny’s death. She confronts one of the bullies at school, but learns he had no involvement. She visits his Kenny’s parents next and promises to find his missing telescope.
Overseeing the case is Sheriff Collins, who acts super friendly with Kara and pretty fatherly toward her. I don’t know what the significance of that is but I’m sure he’s not as friendly as he seems. Otherwise, I do know that they namedropped Chloe Sullivan from Smallville.
Since Kenny agreed to tutor Alex in calculus, she decides to help Kara investigate his death. While searching the woods, they find Kenny’s laptop and discover an incriminating photo of their teacher kissing one of his students. It looks like Kenny was blackmailing him, but with the recent Andrew Kreisberg news, this just seems like a wildly inappropriate and unnecessary storyline. Like, this is supposed to be a Danvers sister episode, and now Supergirl is laying the foundation of their relationship with a dead teen and statutory rape.
Whether you care about the bad timing or correlation with the news, I just think this is a lousy storyline to play with if you’re not going to do your due diligence or really give it the attention it deserves.
To make things even more confusing, an FBI agent named Noelle who looks like Erica Durance (who was re-cast as Alura) visits the Danvers home and warns Kara not to use her powers to intervene. She seems friendly in that “ulterior motive” way and successfully convinces Kara to stop.
As she leaves, she enters a familiar-looking car and shapeshifts in J’onn J’onn’z. Martian Manhunter with the early mind games, what’s up.
Afterward, Alex discovers that Mr. Bernard wasn’t the killer either. Without Kara’s help, she continues to investigate and runs to tell Sheriff Collins about the development. When he hears they’re harboring a laptop of evidence, he isolates Alex within the school and holds her at gunpoint just as Kara discovers he was involved in some sort of drug deal.
Methinks Kara and Alex left Midvale because it’s where all the scumbags lived.
Baby Kara arrives in time to save her, which is simultaneously badass and adorable.
At school the following day, Kara and Alex bond over their new friendship as Kara realizes that Kenny knew her secret the whole time and never said anything. At the end of the night, Eliza brings in Kenny’s telescope and explains that Kenny’s parents wanted her to have it as a thank you.First sister hug! #Supergirl pic.twitter.com/ZQGpRuvQzE— Supergirl (@TheCWSupergirl) November 14, 2017
Present day
Back in the present day, Alex wakes up and finds Kara on the deck messing around with Kenny’s telescope. Alex apologizes without really apologizing while they bang out some of their issues. Finally, Alex relents that it was a good idea to return to Midvale and thanks Kara. Neither of them feels particularly great, but at least they have each other.
